The gods of Rome are powerful allies — and dangerous enemies. Managing divine favor through strategic temple placement, timely offerings, and religious planning is crucial for a successful settlement. This guide covers everything you need to know about the divine system in Nova Roma.
1. Understanding Divine Favor
How Divine Favor Works
Each god tracks your favor level independently. Favor increases through regular offerings and temple construction, and decreases when you neglect a god. High favor unlocks powerful blessings that boost your settlement, while low favor triggers devastating wrath events that can destroy buildings and kill citizens.
Favor Levels
Favor ranges from Wrathful (lowest) to Blessed (highest). At Neutral, gods neither help nor harm you. The key is maintaining at least Neutral with all gods while pushing your primary god toward Blessed status. Each favor level has distinct visual indicators in the temple UI.
Which Gods to Prioritize
Ceres should be your first priority for agricultural bonuses that boost food production. Neptune comes second for water and fishing bonuses. Jupiter provides general protection and happiness. Mars is situational — prioritize him when you need defensive bonuses or face military threats.
2. Temple Placement Strategy
Maximizing Temple Radius
Every temple has an effect radius that provides bonuses to nearby buildings. Place temples centrally among the buildings they benefit most. A Ceres temple belongs in the heart of your agricultural district, while a Neptune temple should overlook your fishing docks and coastline.
Building Multiple Temples
Multiple temples to the same god stack their bonuses and increase favor gain speed. Two small Ceres temples covering different farm clusters is often better than one large temple at the edge. Plan your district layout to accommodate future temple expansion.
Temple Upgrade Path
Temples can be upgraded to higher tiers for stronger bonuses and wider radius. Prioritize upgrading your primary god's temple first. Higher-tier temples also reduce the offering frequency needed to maintain favor, saving resources long-term.
3. Managing Offerings Efficiently
Offering Schedules
Each god requires specific resources as offerings at regular intervals. Jupiter demands wine offerings (5 per year). Ceres requires wheat and bread. Neptune wants fish. Mars demands iron and weapons. Missing an offering deadline causes favor to drop sharply.
Jupiter
5 Wine / year
Ceres
Wheat + Bread
Neptune
Fish
Vulcan
Iron + Pottery
Planning Resources for Offerings
Reserve a portion of your production specifically for temple offerings. A common mistake is consuming all produced goods for citizen needs, leaving nothing for the gods. Build surplus production capacity: at minimum, one extra farm or workshop dedicated to temple supply.
Automating Temple Supply
Place storage buildings near temples and designate them for offering resources. This creates a buffer that ensures temples always have offerings ready. Production buildings near temples can directly supply them, reducing transport delays.
4. Preventing and Surviving Divine Wrath
What Triggers Wrath
Divine wrath is triggered when favor drops below the Angry threshold. This happens when you miss multiple offering deadlines, destroy temples, or neglect a god for too long. Different gods have different patience levels — Mars is the most volatile, while Ceres is the most forgiving.
Wrath Effects by God
Jupiter sends lightning storms that set buildings on fire. Neptune causes devastating floods that can wipe out low-lying districts. Ceres curses your farmland with blight, killing crops. Mars sends raids or weakens your defenses. Each wrath event lasts until you restore favor above Neutral.
Jupiter
Lightning storms, building fires
Neptune
Devastating floods
Ceres
Crop blight, famine
Vulcan
Forge explosions, production halt
Recovering from Wrath
If wrath strikes, immediately start making double offerings to the angry god. Build or repair temples. Focus all spare resources on appeasement. It takes roughly 3-5 offering cycles to move from Wrathful back to Neutral, so prepare for an extended recovery period.
5. Advanced Religious Strategies
Combining God Bonuses
Strategic temple placement can create powerful combo zones. Place a Ceres temple and Neptune temple near coastal farms to get both agricultural and fishing bonuses in one area. Overlap Jupiter's protection radius with your most valuable districts for maximum defense.
Festival and Event Timing
Religious festivals provide temporary massive favor boosts. Time festivals strategically — schedule them when favor is dropping or before major construction projects that might divert resources from offerings. Festivals also boost citizen happiness significantly.
Late-Game Religion
In the late game, maintain high favor with all four gods simultaneously. This unlocks special combined blessings and protects against cascading wrath events. Build the Grand Temple (if available) for a settlement-wide bonus that affects all production and happiness.
